“This, is, a new one.” Sam replied he sounded a little upset.

“Well just throw it away anyways and get a new one. That’s what you do when things don’t work, get old or you get tired of them right?” She just looked at him.

This stopped Sam from what he was doing and just looked at Violet. She shocked him at her words, but she was right. That’s what he did. He looked over at Todd and Todd just shook his head and laughed.

“Thanks but no thanks Sam. But I did have fun today.” And she turned and left Todd followed.

Sam knew at that moment he had to step up his game. She was playing with him now, he thought. All the other women gave in once he poured on his charm. He could just walk away and not bother. He could have anyone he wanted. But he wanted to see how long it would take. He wanted to see what her price was. And he was willing to pay.

The following day at work Violet got flowers from Sam. Everyone just looked at her. One of her friends said “These are from Sam? The Sam? Rich Sam?” wide eyed.

“The same.” Violet said and she threw the flowers away.

“Violet, are you crazy?” and she took the flowers out of the trash.

“Keep them if you want. I don’t want them” and she went about her business.

The next day she got a necklace everyone gasps. Violet returned it. “Why won’t he leave me alone?” she muttered. Everyone just looked at her in shock.

Sam was shocked when the necklace was returned to him. “Oh playing hard to get?” he said out loud. For a month now he was sending her things and she was sending them right back. He had to think. She wouldn’t see him wouldn’t except his gifts. What was her price what did she want? He decided to go see her at work. When Violet saw the limo pull up, she went into the back and hid. She told everyone to tell him she wasn’t working that day. When he walked in they all drooled over him. He looked around. He couldn’t believe she worked in a place like this.

  “Is Violet around?” he asked.

  “It’s her day off.”

Sam chuckled because he saw her peak around the corner. “Well tell her I stopped by my name is…,” he was interrupted.

  “Sam,” someone said.

He looked and smiled. “Yes Sam.”

“We will tell her you stopped by.”

Sam left but he had the driver park around the corner and wait for her. When Violet left from work Sam got out and walked up to her.

  “Violet,” he called.

Violet froze. “What do you want?” she turned.

  “How was your day off?”

“You know it wasn’t my day off.”

“Why did you return my gifts?”

  “Why did you send them?”

“You know why Violet.” Sam looked at her.

  “No I don’t. Tell me”

Sam just looked at her “Why do you play games Violet. You know what I want just a little romance for a while.”

“Why do you play games Sam?”

“I don’t play games Violet. I am upfront with everything I do”

“You play games with hearts and minds Sam,” she looked at him then said “Did someone play with yours? Is that why you are like you are?” she questioned.

Sam got a little upset with her. “You’re not worth this Violet,” he turned to leave.

“See Sam, everyone doesn’t have a price,” she called out to him.

Sam stopped and thought about it. He turned and smiled. “Your good Violet, you’re good. And everyone does have a price. It’s just a matter of finding it. And I will find yours,” he turned and left. Sam couldn’t believe he let Violet get to him like she did. Why did she get to him? Was it because she was playing with him? He didn’t know, but now he was determined more than ever to have her, no matter what the cost was.

“Damn that girl is playing hard to get. Believe me Violet, I will have my fun.” He laughed.

  Chapter 2

It’s been a couple weeks since that day and Sam decided to go sailing. He was out with a few friends. As they were going across the beach area he saw Violet. She was out with some of her friends. She looked so happy and vibrant she was breathtaking. He couldn’t stop staring at her as they sailed by. His desire for her was growing more and more. He had to think of a way to get her. She was playing hard ball and she was the hardest woman he ever had to deal with. He had to really think this one out. Then he remembered Todd saying how sensitive she was. And her words about playing with hearts and minds. Then he knew how to get her. He was going to play with hers. He was going to make her believe he fell in love with her. He smiled, he was so cleaver, he thought. Sam couldn’t wait to put his plan in motion.

Violet got a message at work. It was an apology note from Sam. It said he was sorry for the way he treated her and was acting. He realized she wasn’t like everyone else. She opened his eyes and he wanted to make amends. He said he would like to take her out to dinner. In the hopes she would forgive him and to give him a call. The note sounded sincere, so she called him. They made a date and he sent the limo to pick her up.

When Violet got to the restaurant, Sam gasps, she was stunning. He stood when she got there he smiled “Glad you agreed to meet me”. They sat and he gazed at her.

“So you wanted to apologize?” she finally said.

Sam cleared his throat. “Yes, that time you said something about someone playing with my heart,” he took a deep breath, “the answer is yes Violet.”

Violet reached across the table and put her hand on his and said “Oh Sam, I knew it”

Sam started to think this just might work. “It was really hard on me,” he glanced at her.

“Sorry to hear that. I just had that feeling,” she said. “Do you want to talk about it?”

Sam shook his head. “I am sure you don’t want to hear about my heartache,” and he looked at the table.

Violet squeezed his hand. “It might help,” she smiled.

Sam had to calm down, he knew he had her. Now he had to play, really play the broken hearted millionaire. Sam took a deep breath. He told her a few truths and mostly lies. He watched her face as he spoke. He was really getting to her. He knew this would work and he loved it.

  Damn I am good.

Little by little Sam worked his way into Violets heart. And he knew she fell for him hook line and sinker. But he still had to be patient and wait. He didn’t want to move to fast.

He took her out sailing one day and she loved it. She was leaning back in his arms.

“This is so beautiful out here,” she says and takes a deep breath.

Sam turns her around and says. “Nothing is more beautiful then you,” he gazed into her eyes. Violet started getting flushed, her insides were shaking. She thought he was going to kiss her and she was waiting for it.

“Have you ever been to a luau?”

  “No, no I haven’t.”

“Well how about I take you to one?”

  “I would love to Sam.”

Violet was a little disappointed. She has been waiting for that first kiss. But there was always next time. She didn’t want to scare him away or seem pushy. She was falling in love with him. His watch started to make those funny noises again.

Violet started laughing. “Why don’t you just get a new one?”

He looked at her “This is, a new one,” he replied.

“Well get a different kind then,” she shook her head.

They headed in for the docks. He told her he would pick her up at 7 for the luau.

It’s been over a month now since they have been seeing each other. And Sam was hoping tonight would be the night. He knew she wanted him to kiss her, but he wanted her to want him bad. He would make her wait, like she made him wait. He never waited for a woman this long before. He was hoping it was worth it. The game was fun and a challenge. He was having fun with her she was so naive. He wanted to see what it took, what her price really was. But he didn’t realize the real price he would have to pay for playing with Violets heart. And tonight he
was really going to play with it and make his move. And for Violet, she didn’t see it coming.

Sam picked her up and they got to the luau.

“WOW! Sam, this is amazing,” she was all smiles and glowing. She felt flushed and warm.

“Hope you will enjoy yourself,” he said.

“I am sure I will,” she replied.

He watched her. She was having a great time. And actually so was he. She was beautiful. He wanted to watch her all night. But it was time for him to make his move.

  “What’s the matter Sam?”

“Nothing,” he replied as the smiles went away from his face.

“I can tell something’s upset you. You were having a good time then all the sudden you stopped.” she looked at him. Violet thought she done something wrong. And it crushed her heart to see him look so upset.

He looked at the ground. “I thought I was ready for this…” he started then stopped.

“Ready for what?” she lifted his chin and looked into his eyes.

He turned away from her got up and walked away. He started walking towards the beach. She went after him calling him. “Sam, Sam, ready for what. Please don’t walk away from me,” she caught up to him and grabbed his arm. And he stopped.

“I thought I was ready to open my heart again with you. But…” he stopped again and turned his head.

I am so, so good. He had a hard time not to laugh.

She went and stood in front of him. “Sam don’t be scared, not everyone is the same” She stood on her tip toes and gave him a soft kiss. When she did Sam’s head went into a spin he had to catch his breath.

“I don’t know if I am ready yet Violet.” Sam softly said.

“I will be here waiting, when you’re ready. I won’t push you Sam,” she smiled then she pulled away.

He loves me! I can tell!

“My heart aches for you Violet. I can feel it. My mind screams out, I love you, but…” he looked at her. She had such a big smile on her face. Sam knew by saying that he loved her, he had her.

Violets body felt so flushed when he said that, she had to stay calm, she didn’t want him to see how excited she was. She, Violet captured his heart!

“I love you too Sam. I knew you had it in you somewhere,” she said gazing at him.

He leaned in and kissed her passionately. They found their way to a secluded part of the beach he lay her down. Heat was burning through their bodies for one another. Violet never felt like this, and for Sam, even though he didn’t realize it yet, it would be his first experience in true love.

Violet started to softly moan as he started to caress her. When he touched her his body shivered. He has been waiting for this. And the feeling he was getting just by touching and kissing her. He knew it was going to be well worth the wait. But he had to keep his composer.

“I love you Violet,” he said as he moved over her.

  “Oh Sam,” she softly said.

As he started to love, he never felt feelings like this before. She was so passionate and warm. Her sounds and movements excited him even more. She was amazing and the way the moonlight was shining off her skin, she was glowing. He needed to keep her around he wanted more, more then he realized.

They lay there breathless listening to the sounds of the party.

“Violet, you’re amazing.” Sam looked at her.

“That was love Sam,” she replied and kissed him.

Sam thought to himself, yep he had her, hook line and sinker. Well worth the wait.

As they went to get up Sam’s watch started making noises again. Violet just looked at him and shook her head.

Time went on and Violet was all a glow. She thought Sam really loved her, she could feel it. She wasn’t after his money, she really didn’t care. She still worked her job and that surprised Sam. Usually the women got used to his riches and just forgot about their jobs, but not Violet. He often asks her why she kept working. She would just look at him smile and say “I love my job Sam”. Sam just couldn’t understand this or believe it. So often he would have her followed. The reports back was, she was working. He didn’t realize how hard or how much she really did work.

Violet knew his birthday was in a couple months. She wanted to get him a new watch. But she wanted to buy it for him. She remembers him telling her how women would buy him things, but it was with his own money. So it was like a gift to himself. Violet felt bad when he said those kinds of things. So one day after work she went to a jewelry store and looked for watches. She had on her uniform and she smelt like the restaurant. When she walked in they all just kind of snubbed her.

“May I help you?” asked the sales person.

“Yes I want to buy a watch for my boyfriend,” and she smiled.

“These are very expensive watches,” said the sales person.

Violet just looked at him. “Yes I know.”

“Are you sure you can afford something like that,” he said and just kind of looked at her.

Violet just glared at him. “How do you know what I can and can’t afford?”

The sales person cleared his throat “What one were you looking at?”

Violet pointed he took it out. She looked at the price she almost fainted. She started doing the math in her head, talking out loud. The sales person just stood there listening “Two months before his birthday, I can pick up over time, plus my tips. I can do it,” she looked at him.

  “Are you sure?” he questioned.

  “Positive.” Violet smiled.

“We do require a lay-a-way fee. And if you miss a payment it goes back out on display,” said the sales person then looked at the clerk and grinned.

Violet stood there. “How much for the fee?”

The sales person figured it out real quick, “500 dollars,” he looked at Violet.

Violet started going through her purse she was a few hundred short. “Hold that for me. The bank is across the street.” She ran across the street. She came back a few minutes later. She took all her money out of her savings and handed it to him. “Here is 1000” she said.

The sales person just looked at her. He knew then she was determined to get this watch “Must be some special man,” he said.

Violet smiled. “He is and worth every penny.”

More and more Violet felt like Sam loved her. She never was happier. She was working extra hours. She was running over to the jewelry store every payday and paying on the watch. Sometimes she would run late. But they knew she would show up. They held the store open for her, just so she wouldn’t miss that payment.

Sam was enjoying what he was getting from Violet, he loved it. She was warm loving and so giving. She made him feel really good and satisfied. He never felt like that before and he was enjoying it. His staff actually thought he was happy and content. They thought maybe he really did love her. She was a joy to be around and they all loved Violet. Sam never had a woman more than a couple months. And the staff always had to clean up Sam messes when he broke it off with them. They had to make sure the women were gone, when he got home. Sometimes it was hard, other times it was easy, but it was always tough. But Violet has been around for eight months. Everyone thought for sure she was the one. Sam was always on his guard though. He always thought the women were after his money. He couldn’t think anyone could love him just for him. And when he thought they were too comfortable or when he got tired of them he would break it off. He didn’t let anyone get to close. But his time with Violet it was going fast, he didn’t realize how fast. He wasn’t getting tired of her like he did all the others. He actually looked forward coming home to her.

Sam birthday now was only a few days away and Violet was excited about getting the watch for Sam. She paid for it on her own and she had one more payment to make. She was on the phone talking to Todd talking about it. Sam came in and only heard part of the conversation

“Yes I am so excited about this.” She paused

“When I give this to Sam he will be blown away. He won’t know
what hit him. Time seems like it flew by,” she laughed.

“He doesn’t have a clue. He will be so blindsided, can’t wait to see the look on his face,” she went on and on.

Sam heard enough and he walked away. He had to end it, it was over. He knew she was just like the rest of them. But still he wanted her one last time before he broke it off.

In the morning Sam was getting ready for work. Violet was lying in bed watching him. He was putting on his tie and he said, “I want you gone when I get home tonight,” he straightened his tie.

Violet sat up real quick she was shocked. “You, you what?”

“Gone,” he repeated and turned and looked at her.

“What? Why? Sam,” her eyes started filling with tears and she got out of bed.

“You’re just like the rest Violet. I thought you loved me.”

“Sam, where is this coming from? I do love you.” She cried.

He laughed. “Yeah sure you do. You’re out for the money just like all of them,” he went to walk away.

“Sam how can I prove to you I love you? I will sign anything, do anything to prove I love you. I thought you loved me Sam,” she grabbed his arm.

Sam laughed again then looked at her. “I told you everyone had a price Violet. And I found yours. But for a while I got caught up in it. But my eyes have been opened.” He stood there. The look she had he saw it before but this time something was different, he felt different.

“How could you do this to me Sam? I truly thought you loved me!” She cried harder.

“Love, there is no love, only games. And you played yours well and I played mine. Now we are finished it’s over.”

“Sam, can’t you see I love you! How can I prove I love you and not what or who you are? I told you I will sign anything you want me to.” She cried.

“It doesn’t matter if you sign anything Violet. You still will have the benefits of being with me. Holding on to my shirt tails, the luxuries, just like a high priced hooker.” He glared at her.

“You bastard!” she went to hit him, but he stopped her.

“I want you gone when I get home.” He turned and left the bedroom.
